RESTORING CULTURE ONE STONE AT A TIME

UA HO’ONOHO NIHO ’IA HO’OKU’U KA HANA.

When the stones are set properly, then the work is done.

THE WAHI PANA.

Ancient Hawaiian sites, or wahi pana, such as heiau, loko iʻa and hōlua slides  lay in disrepair with no traditional knowledge and skills to restore them.  As a result,  what was once monolithic structures designed, engineered and constructed by an agriculturally advanced and politically complex society now lie in ruins and with that, a significant part of our Hawaiian history and existence as kanaka māoli. To address this, an idea for cultural restoration was born.

THE HANA.

Hui Ho‘oniho was established to help our Hawaiian community reconnect with their past, to renew their identity as kanaka māoli and to revive Native Hawaiian cultural practices through uhau humu pōhaku.

Through workshops, cohorts and consultations with cultural experts and kūpuna on history and protocols, Hui Hoʻoniho has strived to restore cultural sites and promote stewardship.
